Ride On Belfast Returns During Bike Week

Ride On Belfast made its return to the city this morning, bringing cyclists of all abilities together as part of this year’s Bike Week programme.

The event was funded by Belfast City Council and organised by Cycul. It encouraged more people to discover Belfast by bike while promoting active travel as a practical, healthy and environmentally friendly way to move around the city.

Cyclists travelled from Queen’s University through Belfast city centre before finishing at City Hall.

Lord Mayor Welcomes Cyclists At City Hall

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, welcomed participants at City Hall and praised those who chose to cycle instead of using the car.

She said it was fantastic to see so many people leaving the car at home and choosing cycling as an alternative for their daily commute.

The Lord Mayor said the event was a great opportunity to show the benefits of cycling, whether for everyday journeys, leisure or simply exploring the city.

She added that events like Ride On Belfast help demonstrate how cycling can support a healthier, greener and more connected Belfast.

Ride On Belfast Highlights Active Travel Benefits

Belfast is a compact city, making it well suited to walking and cycling. The event showed how easy it can be to travel through the city on two wheels.

As Belfast prepares to welcome thousands of visitors for the upcoming Fleadh, the council is encouraging people to consider cycling as a convenient way to get around.

Cycling allows visitors and residents to travel at their own pace while helping to keep the city moving.

Cycul Says Cycling Should Be An Everyday Experience

Stephen McNally from Cycul, one of the organisers of the event, said they were delighted to bring Ride On Belfast back to City Hall.

He said the event gives people the chance to experience what it is like cycling to work in a city where cycling is given priority.

He added that cycling is fun, effective, efficient and healthy.

Mr McNally said he hoped the event would encourage more people to embrace cycling to work. He also called on politicians and transport planners to make this experience possible every day, not just once a year.

Belfast City Council Supports More Walking And Cycling

Ride On Belfast is one of several events and initiatives delivered by Belfast City Council to increase cycling participation.

The council is also supporting more walking and cycling across the city through wider active travel work.

The Bolder Vision for Belfast strategy, developed with the Department for Communities and the Department for Infrastructure, aims to prioritise walking, cycling and public transport in the city centre.

The strategy is designed to create more space for people and improve connections with local communities.
