From hedgerows to your plate: the secret world of Northern Ireland's wild plants

Discover the hidden world of Northern Ireland’s wild plants at a special free talk and tasting session at Larne Museum and Arts Centre.

On Saturday 15 August 2026, nutritional therapist Hélène Klingler will explore the edible plants growing in local hedgerows, how to identify them safely, and the traditional knowledge and folklore associated with them.

Learn to Identify Edible Wild Plants
Our hedgerows contain a surprising variety of useful and nutritious plants, many of which have been used for generations as food and in traditional remedies.

During the session, visitors will learn:

How to recognise common edible wild plants
How to distinguish them from potentially dangerous lookalikes
How to prepare and cook wild plants at home
The nutritional value of different wild plants
Traditional stories, beliefs and folklore associated with them
How wild foods have historically been used as part of everyday diets
The talk will also explore how some wild plants may support general wellbeing as part of a balanced diet.

Wild Food Tasting
At the end of the session, participants will have the opportunity to sample a selection of homemade recipes prepared using wild plants and flowers.

It is a chance to experience some of these ingredients first-hand and leave with practical knowledge that can be used again in the future.
