Police appeal after substantial damage caused at vacant Craigavon leisure centre

Police are appealing for information after substantial damage was caused during a burglary at a vacant leisure centre in the Brownlow area of Craigavon. The repair bill could run into tens of thousands of pounds. Officers believe the incident happened sometime between Friday 14 August and Sunday 16 August.

Tens of thousands of pounds of damage caused at Craigavon leisure centre

Police have launched an appeal for information following a burglary at a vacant leisure centre in Craigavon.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland received a report shortly after 10.10am on Monday, 17 August concerning the leisure centre in the Brownlow area.

Officers said substantial damage had been caused inside the building, with the cost expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds.

Police investigating possible link to anti-social behaviour

Sergeant Graham said police had received several recent reports of young people gathering around the site.

Officers are examining whether those reports could be linked to the burglary, which police believe occurred sometime between Friday, 14 August and Sunday, 16 August.

Police are also aware of concerns within the local community about anti-social behaviour around the vacant leisure centre.

As a result, officers said visible police patrols will increase in the area in an effort to deter further activity.

Parents and guardians urged to speak to young people

Police have urged parents and guardians to speak to young people about where they are going and who they are spending time with.

Sergeant Graham warned that anti-social and criminal behaviour could result in people injuring themselves or others.

Police also warned that receiving a criminal record could potentially affect future employment and travel.

Enquiries into the Craigavon leisure centre burglary remain ongoing.

Police want to hear from anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the Brownlow area during the weekend.

Officers are particularly interested in:

  • Witnesses who saw people entering or leaving the site
  • Anyone who noticed suspicious activity between 14 and 16 August
  • Residents with Ring doorbell footage
  • CCTV or other video footage
  • Anyone with information which could assist the investigation
