Prosecutors have formed a draft decision in the case against Jamie McCartney, who faces charges over Jaidyn Rice’s death. The case was adjourned until 5 November, with McCartney remaining on bail.

The Public Prosecution Service has formed a “draft decision” in the Jaidyn Rice case, Newtownards Magistrates’ Court has heard.

Jamie McCartney, 31, faces three charges relating to the death of the 16-year-old in Bangor on 8 July 2025.

A prosecuting lawyer told District Judge Amanda Brady that the decision was in its final stages.

PPS seeks more time in Jaidyn Rice case

Applying for an adjournment, the prosecutor said she had consulted the PPS directing officer.

She told the court that prosecutors needed another two weeks to finalise the decision and send the papers to case preparation.

The court has not been told what the draft decision contains.

Three charges before the court

McCartney is charged with:

  • Causing death by dangerous driving.
  • Causing death by driving while uninsured.
  • Causing death by driving while unlicensed.

Jaidyn died after a collision involving a car on West Circular Road in Bangor at approximately 10.55pm on 8 July 2025.

The PSNI’s original statement confirmed that she died at the scene.

The alleged facts have not yet been formally opened in court. At an earlier hearing, the court heard that police suspected McCartney was using a mobile phone at the time. He denies that allegation.

The charges remain allegations and have not been proven.

Judge addresses Jaidyn’s family

Members of Jaidyn’s family attended the hearing and sat in the public gallery.

Judge Brady assured them that the court was working to progress the case. She acknowledged that progress might not be apparent to the family.

The judge adjourned proceedings for three weeks, saying she expected a decision by the next hearing.

McCartney remains on continuing bail. The case is due to return to court on 5 November.
