How close did Nazi Germany come to invading the United Kingdom during the Second World War?

Join this fascinating history talk exploring Operation Sea Lion, Hitler’s planned invasion of Britain in 1940, and the events that prevented it from becoming a reality.

The evening will examine the German invasion plans, the critical role played by the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain, and what occupation could have meant for people across the UK.

How Close Was Britain to Invasion?
Operation Sea Lion was the code name for Nazi Germany’s proposed invasion of Britain following the fall of France in 1940.

For the invasion to proceed, Germany needed to gain control of the skies over southern England. The Luftwaffe’s failure to defeat the RAF during the Battle of Britain was therefore a decisive factor in preventing the operation from going ahead.

This talk will explore how the invasion was expected to unfold and the enormous military, political and civilian consequences that could have followed.

What Might Nazi Occupation Have Looked Like?
The session will examine German plans and occupation policies, including:

Potential mass arrests and imprisonment
Organisations that could have been banned or targeted
Plans for political control and administration
The possibility of a collaborationist or puppet government
Restrictions on civic and community organisations
Lessons from the German occupation of the Channel Islands
The experience of Jersey, Guernsey and the other occupied Channel Islands offers an important insight into how German rule operated on British territory during the war.

The Battle of Britain
The talk will also look at the RAF’s defence of Britain during the summer and autumn of 1940.

Pilots from Britain, the Commonwealth and several occupied European countries fought to prevent the Luftwaffe achieving the air superiority Germany required for an invasion.

Their success meant that Operation Sea Lion was postponed and ultimately never launched.
