Belfast City Council Leaders Condemn North Belfast Incident As Evening Services Suspended

Party group leaders at Belfast City Council have condemned yesterday evening’s serious incident in north Belfast. They have urged people not to share graphic footage online and asked anyone with information to contact the PSNI. Due to anticipated protests this evening, council services will not operate from 5.30pm, with normal service expected to resume on Wednesday 10 June.

Council Leaders Condemn North Belfast Incident

Party group leaders at Belfast City Council have issued a joint statement condemning yesterday evening’s incident in north Belfast.

In the statement, leaders said violence of this kind is not wanted in the city. They also said their thoughts are with the victim, his family, those who witnessed the incident, and those who intervened.

Appeal Not To Share Graphic Footage Online

Council leaders have encouraged people not to share any footage of the incident due to its graphic nature.

They said sharing footage could cause further trauma to those involved, including the victim, witnesses, family members and members of the wider community.

Support For PSNI Investigation

All party group leaders said they support the PSNI as officers continue their investigation.

Council Services Suspended From 5.30pm

Due to anticipated protests planned this evening, Belfast City Council has confirmed that all council services will not operate tonight from 5.30pm onwards.

This includes:

  • Council venues
  • Overnight cleansing services
  • Tonight’s People and Communities Committee meeting

The People and Communities Committee meeting has been postponed until further notice.

Normal Service Expected To Resume On Wednesday

Belfast City Council said it anticipates normal service will resume as planned on Wednesday 10 June.

Call For Calm Across Belfast

Party group leaders appealed for everyone to unite behind a message of calm, compassion and respect.

They also asked the public to give the PSNI the space needed to carry out their investigation.

Anyone with information relating to the incident should contact police.
