A 45-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of 23-year-old Ellie Flanagan in Enniskillen. His solicitor told the court the defendant is “truly and genuinely sorry” for the pain caused to the victim’s family and community. The accused has been remanded in custody and the case has been adjourned until 30 March.
A man accused of murdering 23-year-old Ellie Flanagan has appeared before Strabane Magistrates’ Court, where his solicitor said the defendant wished to publicly express his remorse.
Martin McCarney, aged 45, appeared via video link from police custody during the hearing on Thursday. His defence solicitor, Denis Moloney, told the court that his client had asked for a statement to be made acknowledging the pain caused by the incident.
Addressing the court, Mr Moloney said the defendant wanted it made clear that he is “truly and genuinely sorry for the pain and suffering caused to the entire family and the wider community in Enniskillen following the events of the past week.”
McCarney faces a charge of murdering Ellie Flanagan on 7 March this year.
He is also charged with possession of offensive weapons — specifically three knives — with intent to commit an indictable offence, namely murder.
During the short hearing, the accused confirmed that he understood the charges being brought against him.
The defence did not challenge the formal connection between McCarney and the alleged offences and also confirmed that no application for bail was being made.
Detective Sergeant Boyce told the court that she was familiar with the circumstances surrounding the investigation and believed there was sufficient evidence to link the defendant to the charges.
No further details of the alleged incident were outlined during the hearing.
However, the PSNI previously confirmed that a murder investigation was launched after Ellie Flanagan was found dead at a property in Enniskillen on Monday.
Police officers had initially been carrying out enquiries linked to a road traffic collision on the Carn Road near Tempo at approximately 9.15pm on Saturday when the discovery was made.
Detective Chief Inspector Gary Robinson previously extended condolences to the victim’s loved ones and renewed an appeal for information from the public.
He said:
“Our thoughts remain with Ellie’s family and loved ones during what is an incredibly distressing time.”
Police are continuing to ask anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward.
Anyone who may be able to help is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1564 of 07/03/26.
At the conclusion of the hearing, District Judge Alana McSorley granted the defendant legal aid.
McCarney was remanded in custody and the case has been adjourned until 30 March.
