Council Awards £1 Million Grants to Strengthen Rural Communities Across Fermanagh and Omagh

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has awarded £1 million to eight community organisations through its Strategic Capital Projects Grant Programme. The funding will support new sports facilities, community hubs, walkways, and accessibility improvements aimed at boosting health, wellbeing, and social connection across rural communities. Applications for the next round of grants open on 13 April 2026.


£1 Million Investment in Rural Community Infrastructure

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has awarded £1 million in grants to eight community and voluntary organisations across the district to improve facilities and strengthen rural communities.

The funding forms part of the Council’s five-year £5 million Strategic Capital Projects Grant Programme, which supports community-led developments designed to deliver long-term benefits for residents across the district’s rural areas.

The initiative recognises the important role that community organisations play in promoting health, wellbeing, social inclusion and community connection in towns and villages throughout Fermanagh and Omagh.

 Projects Receiving Strategic Capital Grants

Eight projects have been awarded funding during the 2025–2026 funding round, supporting a wide range of infrastructure improvements and new facilities.

Sustainability & Community Project – £300,000

Omagh Lawn Tennis Club

Planned upgrades include:

  • A canopy over two tennis courts
  • A covered padel court
  • A pickleball court
  • Solar panel installation
  • Improvements to existing facilities
  • Wheelchair-friendly parking and accessibility upgrades

Community Health & Wellbeing Hub – £100,000

Enniskillen Gaels

The funding will support a new community facility, replacing a derelict structure.

The new building will include:

  • Multi-purpose community space
  • Training rooms
  • Toilets and storage
  • Parking facilities
  • Improved public realm areas

Maguiresbridge Community Walkway – £100,000

St Mary’s Maguiresbridge GFC

This project will deliver an accessible multi-use walkway built with locally sourced materials and LED lighting to promote physical activity and social interaction for residents of all ages.

Community Walkway, Event Space & MUGA – £99,919.43

St. Molaise GFC, Irvinestown

The development includes:

  • 1km and 3km walking loops around the town
  • A community event space
  • A social coffee hub known as the Coffee Shaq
  • A multi-use games area (MUGA) to support inclusive play and sport

Indoor Multi-Sport Shared Facility – £100,000

Teemore Shamrocks

Funding will support the development of a full-size indoor 4G multi-use pitch, providing year-round access for sports groups and helping overcome challenges faced by rural communities during poor weather conditions.

Floodlight Installation Project – £93,204

Beragh Swifts Football Club

Energy-efficient LED floodlights will be installed to:

  • Extend pitch usage hours
  • Improve safety for players and spectators
  • Support walking and active travel

The upgrade is part of a wider long-term plan to develop a community sports hub.

Multi-Use Shared Community All-Weather Pitch – £100,000

Tattyreagh GAA Club

The funding will help deliver a floodlit MUGA facility, designed for year-round use by:

  • Schools
  • Community groups
  • Sports clubs
  • Local residents

All-Inclusive Sustainable Gym & Sensory Trail – £100,000

Éire Óg An Charraig Mhór, Carrickmore

Plans include an eco-friendly community hub featuring:

  • An accessible gym
  • Meeting rooms
  • Sensory equipment
  • Fully accessible facilities
  • An outdoor sensory trail

Supporting Rural Communities and Wellbeing

The grants were awarded following a competitive application process, where organisations were required to demonstrate match funding and obtain necessary approvals.

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Barry McElduff, praised the projects and their community impact.

He said the Council is committed to addressing the needs of rural communities and supporting projects that improve wellbeing and social inclusion.

He added that the developments will help:

  • Reduce rural isolation
  • Encourage physical activity
  • Create inclusive spaces for communities to gather
  • Future-proof community infrastructure
