Senior Citizens Across Mid and East Antrim to Receive Scam Prevention Advice

Community Safety Wardens are distributing The Little Book of Big Scams to senior citizens across Mid and East Antrim. The guide explains common scams, warning signs and practical ways residents can protect themselves from fraud.

Senior citizens across Mid and East Antrim are being given additional advice on how to recognise and avoid scams as part of a community safety initiative.

Community Safety Wardens are distributing copies of The Little Book of Big Scams, a guide designed to help people identify fraudulent activity and protect themselves from becoming victims.

The booklet was produced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in partnership with ScamwiseNI and covers a range of common scams.

Common Scams Residents Are Being Warned About

Although scams can affect anyone, older and more vulnerable residents can be particularly affected.

The guidance highlights several types of fraud, including:

• Courier fraud
• Romance scams through social media and dating platforms
• Financial and investment fraud
• Fraudulent letters and correspondence
• Rogue traders

The booklet also explains the different ways criminals may approach potential victims and the tactics they use to gain trust or deceive people.

Scam Advice for Mid and East Antrim Residents

The Little Book of Big Scams provides advice on:

• Common scams people should be aware of
• How scammers make contact
• Tactics criminals use to deceive victims
• Warning signs to look out for
• Practical steps people can take to protect themselves
• Where to seek advice and support

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness of fraud and help prevent residents from becoming victims of scams.

Community Safety Wardens Supporting Senior Citizens

Councillor Tyler Hoey, Chair of Mid and East Antrim Policing and Community Safety Partnership, said the booklet could help vulnerable residents recognise potential scams and protect themselves from fraud.

He said:

“The Little Book of Big Scams is an excellent resource to help vulnerable residents identify potential scams and protect themselves from fraud.

“Our Community Safety Wardens work tirelessly to support senior citizens and raise awareness of the many tactics used by scammers to steal money.

“By distributing this booklet, they are helping local people stay informed and potentially save hundreds of pounds.”

Roy McClean, the Housing Executive’s Assistant Area Housing Manager for Mid and East Antrim, also praised the work of the Community Safety Wardens.

He said:

“The Community Safety Wardens provide invaluable support and advice to vulnerable residents.

“They complement the work of Housing Executive staff by providing a reassuring presence and make a positive contribution to community safety.

“We are delighted that this will create greater awareness amongst senior citizens about those who unfortunately do get targeted by scammers.”
