Police seize electric Surron bike in Downpatrick after rider flees and drops phone

Police have seized an electric Surron motorbike on the Killough Road in Downpatrick after its rider allegedly fled on foot and dropped a mobile phone. Officers say both the bike and phone will now be forensically examined as part of efforts to identify the rider.

Police have seized an electric Surron bike in Downpatrick after officers encountered the motorbike while carrying out mobile patrols in the area.

The incident happened on the Killough Road, where officers spotted the electric motorbike carrying a rider and passenger.

According to police, the rider stopped to allow the passenger to get off. Officers then moved in and seized the bike.

Rider runs off and drops mobile phone

Police said the rider managed to escape on foot.

However, officers revealed that the individual dropped a mobile phone while running away.

The seized Surron bike and mobile phone will now undergo forensic examination as police attempt to establish the identity of the rider.

In a light-hearted message directed at the person involved, police said anyone wishing to claim the bike and phone could contact officers or call into Downpatrick Police Station.

Member of public reports alleged dangerous riding

Shortly after officers seized the bike, police said they were approached by a member of the public.

The person reportedly told officers that the same rider had almost collided with him while overtaking several vehicles.

Police said the bike was allegedly being ridden at well above the speed limit at the time.

No collision was reported.

Police warn over Surron bikes in Downpatrick

Police have again highlighted concerns surrounding the use of electric Surron-style bikes on public roads.

Officers said:

“Surron bikes continue to be a danger to other road users and pedestrians in the community. We will continue to crack down on their use.”
