Man, 41, charged to court following Newtownabbey death

A 41-year-old man has been charged with several offences following the death of a woman in Newtownabbey in October 2025.

He is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court today, Wednesday 9 September 2026. Police have also confirmed he is to be reported to the Public Prosecution Service in respect of manslaughter.

Man charged following death of woman in Newtownabbey

A 41-year-old man has been charged following the death of a woman in Newtownabbey, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has confirmed.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have charged the man to appear before court.

The charges follow the death of a woman in the Old Mill Drive area of Newtownabbey on Sunday 12 October 2025.

Man due before Belfast Magistrates’ Court

Police said the 41-year-old has been charged with offences including:

• non-fatal strangulation
• domestic abuse
• assault occasioning actual bodily harm

He is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court today, Wednesday 9 September 2026.

As is standard procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service for Northern Ireland.

Manslaughter matter to be reported to PPS

Police have also confirmed that the man is to be reported to the Public Prosecution Service in respect of the offence of manslaughter.

This is separate from the offences with which he has currently been charged.

The PPS prosecution process explains that prosecutors consider evidence submitted by police before deciding whether a prosecution should proceed.

The PPS applies a two-stage Test for Prosecution, considering whether there is sufficient evidence to provide a reasonable prospect of conviction and whether prosecution is in the public interest.

Woman died at Old Mill Drive address

Police officers and colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended an address in Old Mill Drive on the afternoon of Sunday 12 October 2025.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, who was aged 40 at the time, was initially arrested in connection with the death.

Following a post-mortem examination, police subsequently confirmed that the woman’s death was not being treated as murder at that time.

The man was later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police said at the time that enquiries were continuing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

Legal proceedings

Court proceedings are now active.

The charges against the defendant are allegations and have not been proven in court. The defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty.
