Experience Marita Conlon-McKenna’s much-loved children’s novel Under the Hawthorn Tree in a powerful and immersive exhibition exploring hardship, loss and survival during the Great Famine.

Often first encountered in school, the novel follows siblings Eily, Michael and Peggy O’Driscoll as they are left alone during the famine and forced to begin a dangerous journey in search of their great-aunts.

Discover the Story in a New Way
Determined to avoid the workhouse, the three children face a series of frightening challenges, including a dog attack, a violent thunderstorm and the devastating effects of hunger, disease and injustice.

The exhibition brings their journey to life through a combination of historical objects, sounds, smells, interactive displays and original illustrations.

Visitors of all ages are invited to step into the world of the novel and gain a deeper understanding of both the story and the realities of life during the Great Famine.

Full-Size Hawthorn Tree Installation
At the centre of the exhibition is a full-size handcrafted hawthorn tree created by Bob Johnston, resident willow weaver at the Ulster Folk Museum in Cultra.

This striking installation forms the focal point of the exhibition and provides a memorable visual connection to the novel’s title and themes.
