Global Events and Attractions Ltd, the funfair firm implicated in the Star Flyer swing ride collapse at Planet Fun in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, is set to stand trial over alleged safety failures. The incident, which occurred in July 2021, resulted in injuries to up to six people, including four children, prompting a private health and safety investigator to also face charges in connection with the case.

Planet Fun, responding to the incident at the time, claimed that an initial inquiry found no mechanical defects and attributed the collapse to teenagers misusing the equipment on the attraction. The Health and Safety Executive of Northern Ireland conducted its own investigation into the matter.

During a recent hearing at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, Global Events Ltd, with an address at Hamilton Road in Bellshill, was formally charged with failing to ensure a safe system of work for all its employees. The company also faces an additional charge for failing to protect non-employees. The alleged breaches of the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order are said to have occurred between July 12 and July 25.

Jeff Johnson, aged 72 and residing at Mill Cottage Park in Newtownards, appeared in court facing a single count of exposing others to a risk to health and safety during the same period. While Mr. Johnson confirmed his understanding of the allegations against him, he declined to give evidence or call witnesses during the preliminary enquiry.

Legal representatives for both defendants did not contest the submissions, acknowledging that they have prima facie cases to answer. District Judge George Conner granted the prosecution’s application, confirming that both parties would be returned for trial at Belfast Crown Court, with the date to be fixed by the Recorder.

Mr. Johnson was released on continuing bail, with Judge Conner advising him that his legal advisers would keep him informed about the trial date.
