Belfast Bikes e-bikes helping boost usage

The revamped Belfast Bikes scheme includes 100 electric bikes and 300 pedal bikes.

The e-bikes were introduced after Belfast City Council received £500,000 in Department for Infrastructure funding to support active travel.

When Beryl was announced as operator in April 2025, the council said electric bikes could make longer journeys easier and provide another sustainable transport option within Belfast.

Belfast Bikes is now described by the council as Belfast’s publicly subsidised bike-sharing scheme, with bikes available for journeys to work, education and leisure.

Belfast Bikes prices

The current Belfast Bikes pay-as-you-go tariff starts at:

• Pedal bike: 7p per minute, plus a 50p unlock fee
• E-bike: 14p per minute, plus a £1 unlock fee

Minute bundles are also available, with larger packages reducing the effective per-minute cost.

The council currently lists packages ranging from 100 minutes through to 3,000 minutes, with validity periods ranging from 30 days to one year.

World Car-Free Day encourages Belfast commuters to switch

World Car-Free Day is being used to encourage people across Belfast to consider walking, cycling and public transport for journeys where possible.

Beryl CEO Phil Ellis said the day offered people an opportunity to think differently about how they travel around the city.

He said:

“The success of Belfast Bikes over the past year demonstrates that, when people are given a reliable, affordable and accessible alternative, they are willing to make more sustainable travel choices.”

He added that Belfast Bikes provides an option for people commuting to work, travelling to university, meeting friends or exploring Belfast.

Belfast City Council has also been promoting wider active travel initiatives in the city, including cycling programmes and infrastructure designed to encourage more journeys by bike or on foot.

60 Belfast Bikes docking locations across the city

The Belfast Bikes network includes 60 parking bays across Belfast, according to Belfast City Council.

Newer locations include connections around major destinations such as Belfast Grand Central Station and Titanic Quarter.

Users download the Beryl app, locate an available bike and scan its QR code to begin their journey.

At the end of the trip, the bike must be returned to a designated Beryl bay and locked correctly.

Belfast Bikes continues to grow

The latest figures represent another significant stage in the development of Belfast’s public bike hire network.

The original Belfast Bikes scheme launched in 2015 with 30 docking stations and 300 bikes. The network has since expanded substantially.

With electric bikes now part of the fleet and record journey numbers being reported, the scheme is playing an increasing role in how people make shorter journeys around Belfast.
