Police appeal after burglaries and car theft in Belfast and Newtownabbey

Police are appealing for information following a burglary in Newtownabbey and a car theft in north Belfast during the early hours of Saturday, 22 August 2026.

A vehicle believed to have been used in the Newtownabbey burglary had earlier been stolen from outside a house in the Somerton Road area after car keys were taken from the property. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Salisbury Gardens.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dash-cam footage is being asked to contact police.

Police investigate Belfast and Newtownabbey incidents

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a burglary in Newtownabbey and car theft in Belfast which police believe are linked.

Police received a report at approximately 4am on Saturday, 22 August, that a man had gained entry to commercial premises on the Antrim Road in Newtownabbey.

According to police, a window was smashed to gain access to the premises.

The suspect then allegedly made off with a number of items.

Stolen vehicle linked to Newtownabbey burglary

Initial police enquiries identified a vehicle believed to have been connected with the burglary.

Officers later established that the vehicle had previously been stolen from outside a property in the Somerton Road area of north Belfast.

Police said access had been gained to a house before the keys to the vehicle were taken.

The vehicle was subsequently located abandoned by officers on Salisbury Gardens.

No one was present when police found the vehicle.

Police appeal for CCTV and dash-cam footage

Detectives want to speak to anyone who was in the Antrim Road, Somerton Road or Salisbury Gardens areas at around 4am and noticed suspicious activity.

Police are particularly interested in obtaining:

  • CCTV footage
  • Doorbell camera footage
  • Dash-cam recordings
  • Information about suspicious people or vehicles
