August Craft Month: Showcase of Traditional Crafts

Ballymena 400 Traditional Crafts Showcase at Midtown Makers
Celebrate August Craft Month and Ballymena’s 400th anniversary with a special evening of traditional crafts, demonstrations and hands-on activities at Midtown Makers Gift Shop.

Taking place on Thursday 20 August 2026 from 6pm, the event will showcase the skills, creativity and craftsmanship that have helped shape Ballymena’s cultural heritage across generations.

Celebrate Ballymena’s Creative Heritage
As Ballymena marks 400 years since the granting of its charter, this event offers visitors the chance to explore traditional making techniques and learn more about the town’s long connection with craft and creativity.

The evening forms part of August Craft Month, Ireland’s annual celebration of the craft sector, organised in partnership by the Design & Crafts Council and Craft NI.

Visitors will be able to watch live demonstrations, meet experienced makers and try selected crafts for themselves.

Craft Demonstrations and Taster Sessions
Felting with Shelley Steele
Discover the traditional technique of felting and create your own small felted bowl during this hands-on taster session with Shelley Steele.

Crochet with Amanda Jones
Learn the basics of crochet with experienced maker Amanda Jones, who will guide participants through simple stitches and techniques suitable for beginners.

Aran Knitting with Linda Wray
Watch Linda Wray demonstrate traditional Aran knitting, using the distinctive cable patterns and stitches associated with the Aran Islands to create a classic cardigan.

Bobbin Lace Making
Explore the intricate craft of bobbin lace with Yvonne Parker, Nora Evans and Patricia Cummings from Ards Bobbin Lace.

Visitors can try a basic stitch using a practice pillow and view examples of detailed handmade lace.

Sewing with Irish Linen
Improve your sewing skills with Sally White, who will demonstrate practical techniques for working with a sewing machine and Irish linen.

Ballymena Craft Heritage Exhibition
An accompanying exhibition will explore the history and development of traditional crafts in Ballymena.

The display will look at how local craftsmanship has evolved over the centuries and the role makers have played in the town’s cultural and economic life.

Local Treats
Visitors can also enjoy a selection of locally handmade treats prepared using traditional recipes, adding another taste of local heritage to the evening.
