New Toilet and Shower Facilities Coming to Browns Bay

New toilet and shower facilities at Browns Bay are due to be constructed by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, with work expected to begin in early June 2026.

The improved facilities will support residents, swimmers, visitors and families who use the popular coastal beauty spot on the Islandmagee peninsula.

What Will Be Included?

The new Browns Bay facilities will include:

  • Male and female toilets
  • New outdoor showers for swimmers and beach users
  • A specialised Changing Places unit
  • Improved accessible facilities
  • A sluice facility for touring vehicles to dispose of chemical toilet waste

The inclusion of a Changing Places unit is a major part of the project. It will help ensure people with additional needs can enjoy Browns Bay with more dignity, comfort and support.

Browns Bay Remains a Popular Coastal Spot

Browns Bay is a horse-shoe shaped bay at the north of the Islandmagee peninsula, between Skenaghan Point and Barrs Point.

The area is well known for:

  • Sea swimming
  • Picnics
  • Scenic walks
  • Family days out
  • Coastal views
  • Easy access, including a large car park and wheelchair accessible grass area

Council Says Accessibility Is a Priority

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said inclusion and accessibility are vitally important to Council.

He said the investment will provide new and improved accessible facilities at Browns Bay, helping more residents and visitors enjoy the coastline in the years ahead.

The Mayor also welcomed the dedicated Changing Places unit, saying it will help ensure all visitors have their needs catered for.

Temporary Toilets to Remain During Construction

During the construction period, the current temporary toilet facilities will remain in place.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council expects the new toilet block to be operational before the end of 2026.

Why This Investment Matters

This project will improve the visitor experience at one of Mid and East Antrim’s most scenic coastal locations.

Better toilets, showers and accessible facilities will make Browns Bay more welcoming for swimmers, families, tourists and people with additional access needs.
