A new advanced manufacturing facility has officially opened in Larne, creating 41 operational and engineering jobs. Superconducting Technologies Northern Ireland will manufacture specialist materials used primarily in MRI machines, with Invest NI supporting the project with £287,000 towards the new roles.

A major advanced manufacturing investment in Larne is creating 41 new jobs following the official opening of a specialist production facility at Ballyhampton Road.

Superconducting Technologies Northern Ireland (STNI), owned by Xi’an Superconducting Wire Technologies Co Ltd (XST), has established the new operation as the Chinese manufacturer’s first investment outside China.

The company will produce high-performance superconducting materials. These are processed into superconducting wire and used primarily in magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, machines.

41 New Jobs Through Advanced Manufacturing Investment in Larne

The investment will create 41 operational and engineering jobs in Larne.

Invest Northern Ireland has offered £287,000 towards the creation of the new roles.

According to Invest NI, the jobs have the potential to contribute almost £1.5 million each year to the Mid and East Antrim economy.

This included supporting visits to Northern Ireland to assess possible manufacturing locations and helping the company establish its new Larne facility.

What Will the Larne Factory Manufacture?

XST specialises in superconducting materials and magnets used across several high-technology industries.

Applications include:

• Medical imaging and MRI machines
• Scientific research
• Semiconductor production
• Particle accelerators
• Maglev transport

Council Welcomes New Larne Manufacturing Jobs

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Thomas Gordon, welcomed the investment and the decision to establish the operation in Larne.

He said:

“I am delighted to welcome XST and Superconducting Technologies Northern Ireland to Larne and to see this important investment taking shape here in Mid and East Antrim.”

He said the borough has a strong manufacturing heritage, skilled workforce and growing reputation for innovation and advanced manufacturing.

The Mayor added:

“The creation of 41 new jobs is very welcome for Larne and the wider borough, while the specialist nature of this operation also adds to the diversity and strength of our manufacturing base.”

The council said it wants STNI to become part of the local business community and its manufacturing industry network.

Invest NI Chief Executive Kieran Donoghue said the decision to establish the operation in Larne demonstrated confidence in Northern Ireland’s advanced manufacturing sector.

He said:

“The company’s decision to manufacture its alloy wires for MRI machines in Larne is a strong vote of confidence in Northern Ireland as a location for international investment and especially advanced manufacturing.”

Mr Donoghue added:

“Our support is helping the company to create 41 jobs which have the potential to contribute almost £1.5 million annually to the local Mid and East Antrim area.”

Superconducting Technologies Northern Ireland Co Ltd is registered as an active Northern Ireland company.

Companies House records show the company was incorporated in June 2025, with activities relating to non-ferrous metal production.

The Larne operation represents XST’s first investment outside China and adds another specialist manufacturer to the Mid and East Antrim economy.
