

Almost 1,800 primary school pupils from 17 schools across the Mid and East Antrim area are preparing to cast their votes in a special ‘Top Children’s Author Election’ to mark Democracy Week 2026.
The vote will take place on World Book Day, Thursday 5 March, bringing together literacy and civic engagement in a unique, interactive event for young people.
The initiative is organised by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and aims to introduce pupils to the fundamentals of democracy in a fun and accessible way.
Ten local Northern Ireland authors will compete for the title of ‘Top Children’s Author’, with pupils acting as the electorate.
To build excitement ahead of polling day, the Council has extended this year’s programme to include an Author’s Roadshow, designed to energise and engage the young voters.
As part of the build-up, Ireland’s Children’s Literature Laureate, Patricia Forde, will visit schools in Ballymena.

The visits will give students the opportunity to hear directly from an acclaimed author and illustrator, inspiring both their love of reading and their understanding of public participation.
This hands-on experience will give children a practical understanding of how elections operate, from campaigning to counting.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Jackson Minford, highlighted the educational value of the initiative.
He described Democracy Week as an important opportunity to strengthen civic engagement and help young people understand the role of elected representatives.
