Mid Ulster Retains Top Recycling Spot in Northern Ireland

Mid Ulster has once again recorded the highest household recycling rate of all 11 councils in Northern Ireland. Official figures for July to September 2025 show the district reached 63.2%, an increase of 1% compared with the same period in 2024.

Mid Ulster Leads Northern Ireland Recycling Rates

Mid Ulster continues to set the standard when it comes to recycling in Northern Ireland.

Newly released official figures for Quarter 2 (July – September 2025) show that Mid Ulster District Council achieved the highest household recycling rate across all 11 councils, reaching 63.2%.

This marks a 1% increase compared with the same quarter in July to September 2024, highlighting the ongoing commitment of residents across the district to reducing waste and recycling more.

The latest figures build on previous success, with Mid Ulster already confirmed earlier this year as having the highest annual household recycling rate across all Northern Ireland councils for 2024/25, reaching 59.3%.

Key Recycling Figures

  • 63.2% recycling rate recorded between July and September 2025
  • Highest recycling rate of all 11 councils in Northern Ireland
  • 1% increase compared with the same quarter in 2024
  • 59.3% annual recycling rate for the 2024/25 period

Council Praises Residents for Recycling Efforts

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Christine McFlynn, welcomed the latest figures and praised local households for their continued commitment to recycling.

We are absolutely delighted that Mid Ulster has once again achieved the highest household recycling rate of all 11 councils in Northern Ireland for the second quarter of 2025. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the continued commitment of our residents to doing the right thing for the environment.

What makes this result even more encouraging is that it follows the announcement earlier this year that Mid Ulster also recorded the highest annual household recycling rate across all councils for 2024/2025. Maintaining that top position shows that recycling has become firmly embedded in the everyday habits of households right across the district.

I want to sincerely thank our residents for their efforts and for continuing to separate and present their waste correctly. Their participation plays a vital role in helping us reduce landfill, protect our environment, and move towards a more sustainable future for Mid Ulster.”

Why the Mid Ulster Recycling Rate Matters

Maintaining a strong recycling rate benefits both the environment and the wider community.

Key benefits include:

  • Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill
  • Protecting the local environment
  • Encouraging sustainable household habits
  • Helping councils meet environmental targets

By consistently achieving high recycling figures, Mid Ulster is demonstrating how local communities can play a major role in protecting the environment.

Mid Ulster’s 63.2% household recycling rate once again places the district at the top of Northern Ireland’s recycling league table.

The latest figures show that recycling has become a normal part of daily life for households across the district, helping to reduce landfill waste and protect the environment.

With continued support from residents, Mid Ulster is likely to remain one of the leading recycling areas in Northern Ireland.
