The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, recently welcomed volunteers from the Samaritans to her Parlour to recognise the vital work they do and raise awareness of the services they provide.

Samaritans is a registered charity which provides round-the-clock confidential support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide. It offers a safe place to talk about problems without fear of judgement – 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year.

The volunteers highlighted their upcoming ‘Brew Monday’ campaign taking place on Monday 15 January. Blue Monday (the third Monday in January) is often said to be one of the most difficult days of the year.

In a bid to uplift the nation – on ‘Brew Monday’, and in the run-up to it, the Samaritans are encouraging people to grab their mugs and lend an ear to loved ones – raising awareness of the importance of checking in with family, friends, and colleagues by offering a cup of tea and a chat. And not just on Brew Monday, but all through the year.

The Mayor said: “It was a privilege to welcome these amazing volunteers to my Parlour and hear all about the excellent work this vital charity undertakes across our Borough. The charity is on hand for anyone who may be struggling and in need of advice, support and help.

“The charity brings hope to so many in difficult times and for that we are truly grateful.”

Volunteers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on the freephone helpline number 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org
