Irish Language Week in Mid & East Antrim

Irish Language Week 2025 is underway, and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bréanainn Lyness, is encouraging residents across Mid and East Antrim to take part in a series of events celebrating the rich history and culture of the Irish language.

Upcoming Irish Language Week Events in Mid & East Antrim

Traditional Music & Storytelling Night – Wednesday, 12 March

📍 Location: Studio Theatre, The Braid

This celebration of Irish culture will feature performances from talented local musicians, including:

• Portglenone CCE
• Ceoltoirí Baile Randal
• Glór Dhal Raida (Ballymena)
• Elaine and Nigel Black
• Special guest performers

The evening will also include Irish dancing and storytelling from renowned Irish folk storyteller Steve Lally.

Cattle Battle – Medieval Gaming Event – Thursday, 13 March

📍 Location: Carrickfergus Town Hall

Step back in time with Cattle Battle, a medieval-themed gaming event developed by Carrickfergus Museum. Participants will take on character roles, uncovering the challenges faced by medieval communities.

Irish History Walking Tour of Ballymena – Friday, 14 March

📍 Starting Point: Harmony Hub, Ballymena
⏰ Time: 2:00 PM
🚶 Distance: 1.5 miles

Led by tour guide Alastair Donaghy, this historical walking tour will explore:

• Local graveyards and historical landmarks
• The history of early Presbyterianism
• Links to Roger Casement, the United Irishmen of 1798, and Rose Young of Galgorm Castle

What is Irish Language Week?

Running annually from 1st – 17th March, Irish Language Week aims to promote and celebrate the Irish language, heritage, and culture, inspiring people to engage with the language.
