Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to Return to Belfast in 2027

Belfast Confirmed to Host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 2027

Belfast has officially been confirmed as the host city for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 2027, marking the second consecutive year the city will stage the world’s largest celebration of Irish music and culture.

The announcement was made in Dublin on Saturday 7 March following a meeting of the Ardchomhairle of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. The news comes as Belfast prepares to host the event for the first time from 2 to 9 August 2026.

Hosting the festival for two consecutive years means Belfast will become the first location in Northern Ireland to hold Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann twice, strengthening the city’s reputation as a major destination for international cultural festivals.

A Major Cultural Festival Expected to Attract 800,000 Visitors

The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Belfast 2027 event will be organised by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, in partnership with Belfast City Council and Ards CCÉ.

The eight-day festival will feature:

  • All-Ireland music competitions
  • Traditional concerts and performances
  • Céilí dances
  • Irish language and cultural events
  • Street performances and family activities

Organisers expect the festival to attract more than 800,000 visitors, delivering a significant boost to tourism, hospitality and local businesses across Belfast.

Sharon Shannon to Headline Opening Ceremony in 2026

Alongside the announcement of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann Belfast 2027, organisers also revealed the artists performing at the opening ceremony of the 2026 festival.

Legendary musician Sharon Shannon and her Big Band will headline the Main Stage outside Belfast City Hall on Sunday 2 August 2026.

The acclaimed accordion player, known for her energetic performances and genre-blending collaborations, will launch the festival week with a major open-air concert.

Other performers on the famous Gig Rig stage will include:

  • Award-winning group Goitse
  • Blackwater Céilí Band, former All-Ireland champions
  • Belfast traditional ensemble McPeake

The opening event will also feature:

  • School choirs
  • Cross-community performances
  • Multicultural music acts

All of which will create a day of free entertainment in the heart of the city.

Belfast’s Growing Reputation as a UNESCO City of Music

Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Paul Doherty, welcomed the announcement and highlighted the cultural importance of hosting the festival twice.

He said the decision reinforces Belfast’s position as the island’s only UNESCO City of Music and provides a major opportunity to showcase the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

The two-year staging of the festival is also expected to deliver significant economic benefits, supporting:

  • Local hotels and accommodation providers
  • Restaurants, pubs and cafés
  • Tourism attractions
  • Cultural organisations and venues

Organisers Praise Belfast Partnership

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann praised the strong partnership with Belfast City Council and the host branch Ards CCÉ, saying Belfast offers a perfect environment for the event.

Dr Labhrás Ó Murchú, Director-General of Comhaltas, said Belfast’s combination of world-class venues, lively streets and strong community support made the decision easy.

Major venues expected to play a role in the festival include:

  • Waterfront Hall
  • Ulster Hall
  • Outdoor stages across the city

The 2027 festival will also mark the 75th milestone year of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, adding further significance to the event’s return to Belfast.

Fleadh Inspiring New Interest in Irish Traditional Music

According to Niall McClean, Chairperson of Ards CCÉ, interest in Irish traditional music is already growing ahead of the 2026 event.

Music classes in Belfast have seen a surge in enrolment, particularly among young people eager to learn traditional instruments, singing and dance.

He described the Fleadh as more than just a festival, saying it inspires older generations to pass on their musical traditions while encouraging new audiences to embrace Irish culture.
