Legend says she fell in love with a soldier known as Buttoncap, meeting him secretly through a hidden passage by the stone fireplace. When her husband discovered the affair, he is said to have killed them both with his sword.

Elizabeth’s spirit, now known as “Maud”, reportedly still roams the hotel. Guests have described her ghostly presence—stroking faces in the night, drifting through corridors, and even appearing as a black shadow near the old fireplace. Staff have also reported strange happenings, from objects moving to unexplained sounds.
