A Historic Stay in Carrickfergus

Dobbins Inn, located at 6-8 High Street, Carrickfergus, BT38 7AF, is one of Northern Ireland’s most historic hotels. Built over 500 years ago, it has served many purposes—from a medieval tower house to a shelter for priests during the Plantation of Ulster. Today, it offers guests a comfortable stay enriched by centuries of history.

The Legend of “Maud” – Dobbins Inn’s Resident GhostDobbins Inn Carrickfergus Hotel

The inn’s most famous tale is that of Elizabeth Dobbins, wife of Hugh Dobbins. Legend says she fell in love with a soldier known as Buttoncap, meeting him secretly through a hidden passage by the stone fireplace. When her husband discovered the affair, he is said to have killed them both with his sword.

Elizabeth’s spirit, now known as “Maud”, reportedly still roams the hotel. Guests have described her ghostly presence—stroking faces in the night, drifting through corridors, and even appearing as a black shadow near the old fireplace. Staff have also reported strange happenings, from objects moving to unexplained sounds.

Historic Renovations and Modern Comforts

In 1946, the property was restored and converted into a hotel. More recently, in 2019, Dobbins Inn underwent major renovations to celebrate its 800-year history. The frontage was restored to resemble both its medieval castle origins and 15th-century townhouse style.

The inn now offers:

  • Landings Restaurant serving traditional food
  • Bar and lounge with a welcoming atmosphere
