Danske Bank to Close Four Northern Ireland Branches in June 2024

Danske Bank has revealed its intentions to shutter four branches across Northern Ireland come June 7, 2024. The affected branches, located in Carrickfergus, Saintfield, Knock (east Belfast), and Shipquay Place in Derry city center, will cease operations on that date, with their external cash machines also slated for removal.

This move will bring Danske Bank’s branch count down to 24, marking a significant reduction from the 28 branches it currently operates across Northern Ireland. Notably, this downsizing represents less than half of the bank’s estate size of 51 branches back in 2010.

Despite the closures, Danske Bank reassures that there will be no job losses. Aisling Press, the managing director of personal banking at Danske Bank, attributed this decision to evolving customer banking preferences, highlighting the increasing adoption of digital solutions and alternative banking methods such as phone banking and utilizing Post Office services.

Press acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions and emphasized the bank’s commitment to meeting customer needs through various channels. While acknowledging the £8 million investment in upgrading 20 branches over the past eight years, she stressed the importance of adapting to changing customer behaviors and ensuring efficient allocation of resources.

Danske Bank has communicated directly with affected customers, providing assurance of continued support and guidance on alternative banking options. Additionally, the bank has made available a comprehensive customer guide outlining the factors considered in the decision-making process and detailing alternative banking avenues.
