Coleraine Man to Stand Trial Over Alleged Online Sexual Offences

A Coleraine man has been returned for trial at the Crown Court after facing charges linked to alleged online sexual offences involving a child.

The decision was made at Belfast Magistrates Court, where 58-year-old Nicholas Finton O’Brien appeared before the court.

Court Appearance and Charges

During the hearing, O’Brien confirmed his identity and acknowledged that he was aware of the two charges against him.

The accused, who gave an address on Strand Road in Coleraine, is charged with:

  • Attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming
  • Attempting to communicate sexually with a child

The alleged offences are said to have occurred between 19 November and 4 December 2024.

Allegations Outlined to the Court

The court heard that the charges relate to allegations that O’Brien engaged in sexual communication with a named female for the purpose of sexual gratification, at a time when he did not reasonably believe she was aged 16 or over.

It is further alleged that, after communicating with the female, he attempted to arrange a meeting with her. Prosecutors claim that, at the time, he intended to carry out an act during or after the meeting that would have involved the commission of a relevant sexual offence.

No detailed background to the allegations was opened in court.

Judge Finds a Case to Answer

A prosecuting lawyer submitted that there was a prima facie case against the defendant. As the defence raised no objections, Steven Keown, District Judge, said he was satisfied that there was a case to answer.

The case was formally returned to Belfast Crown Court, although no date has yet been fixed for arraignment.

Bail Conditions

O’Brien was released on continuing bail. As part of the conditions, he must not have contact with anyone under the age of 16 unless such contact is approved by Social Services.

What Happens Next

The case will proceed to Belfast Crown Court, where O’Brien is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
