A body discovered in Spain is believed to be that of missing Belfast man John George.

The family of the 37-year-old father of two received a call from the Cuerpo de la Guardia Civil just before 5 p.m. UK time, informing them that a body had been located. While formal identification is still pending, clothing and tattoos found on the body strongly indicate that it is Mr. George, who has been missing since December 14.

Authorities have stated that DNA testing will be required to officially confirm the identity of the remains.

Mr. George’s family is reportedly devastated by the news and has requested privacy as they process the information and make arrangements to bring him back to Northern Ireland for burial.

The last known contact Mr. George had was with his father, Billy, on December 14. He had been scheduled to return home on a flight on December 18 but never boarded the plane. Concerned by his uncharacteristic silence, his family launched an online appeal for information about his whereabouts.

Neighbors in the Orihuela region, where Mr. George had been staying with friends, reported that the individuals renting the luxury apartment vacated the property on December 20 and have not been seen since.

The investigation into Mr. George’s disappearance and the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body is ongoing.
