Belfast City Council Grants Now Open to Support More Music Events for Under 18s

Belfast City Council has launched a series of new funding schemes to boost access to live music and arts events across the city — with a strong focus on young people, inclusion and community-led ideas.

From alcohol-free gigs for under 18s to funding for deaf and neurodivergent musicians, the council is investing in initiatives designed to make Belfast’s cultural scene more accessible and vibrant this spring and summer.

Teenage Kicks: £2,000 Grants for Under-18 Music Events

A brand-new scheme called Teenage Kicks will provide £2,000 grants to venues, festivals and event organisers to host more live music events specifically for under-18 audiences.

The goal is clear:

  • Create safe, high-quality music nights
  • Provide alcohol-free environments
  • Support young people who love live gigs
  • Offer more tailored experiences for teens

The funding aims to address the lack of live music options for younger audiences, ensuring they can enjoy the city’s cultural scene in a safe and welcoming setting.

Deadline: 3pm, Sunday 1 March

Sounds Atypical: £5,000 for Inclusive Music Events

Grants of £5,000 will also be awarded in March under the Sounds Atypical initiative.

Delivered in partnership with University of Atypical, the scheme supports deaf, disabled and neurodivergent musicians to create inclusive music events.

Last year, nine musicians received support, delivering performances at:

  • Bounce Arts Festival
  • The Black Box
  • Botanic Gardens

The programme continues to strengthen accessibility within Belfast’s live music scene.

Traditional Music Grants Ahead of Fleadh Cheoil

In preparation for Fleadh Cheoil this summer, three traditional musicians will receive £3,000 each.

The funding comes through a partnership with TG4’s Gradam Cheoil Awards.

The scheme is delivered in partnership with The Duncairn and includes:

  • Mentorship opportunities
  • Professional development support
  • Showcasing Belfast’s traditional music talent

Application deadline: 12pm, Friday 6 March

£45,000 Boost for Gig Buddies

An additional £45,000 has been allocated to Gig Buddies, run by The Black Box.

The scheme pairs adults with learning disabilities and/or autism with volunteers who share their interests in music, theatre or dance. Together, they attend monthly events across the city.

The programme helps participants:

  • Build confidence
  • Experience nightlife safely
  • Form new social connections

Applications are open on an ongoing basis via The Black Box website.

Bank of Ideas: Funding Community-Led Concepts

Information events are continuing for Bank of Ideas, which invites individuals and communities to pitch creative event ideas.

Successful applicants can receive up to £2,500 to bring their ideas to life.

Previous funded concepts include:

  • A sign language app
  • A sports day for those with learning difficulties
  • Daytime music events for all abilities

Deadline: 5pm, Monday 23 March

Council Response

Councillor Ian McLaughlin, Chair of the City Growth and Regeneration Committee, said:

“Everyone deserves the chance to enjoy their interests and access to music, culture and the arts should be for all of us.

The Teenage Kicks scheme in particular will help support an age group which is under-served and provide experiences tailored to their needs.

Improving and diversifying our cultural scene boosts vibrancy and ensures a wide range of activities and events for everyone.”

A Strong Push for Cultural Inclusion

Together, these funding streams represent a significant investment in:

  • Youth engagement
  • Accessibility and inclusion
  • Community-led creativity
  • Traditional music development
  • Social confidence and wellbeing

Belfast’s cultural calendar is expanding — and these grants aim to ensure more people can take part, regardless of age or ability.

Anyone interested in applying should review deadlines carefully and contact the relevant organisations directly for guidance.
