Belfast City Council has issued a strong statement following an assault on council staff in Belfast city centre during the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident involved three council workers who were carrying out routine duties and delivering essential services at the time. The council confirmed it operates a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of violence or abuse directed at employees and said appropriate support is being provided to those affected.
In a statement, the council emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of its workforce remains a priority, particularly for staff working unsociable hours in public spaces.
John Walsh, Chief Executive of Belfast City Council, said the attack was entirely unjustified.
“This was an unwarranted attack on three council workers, simply out doing their job and delivering key services for our city. I condemn it completely and urge anyone with any information to help police with their enquiries.”
The council has appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant information or footage, to contact the PSNI to assist with ongoing enquiries.
