Leanne’s Journey: A Mother’s Fight for Her Child and a Better Healthcare System

Leanne Hawthorne, a mother of six from Carrickfergus, is facing a heart-wrenching battle to save her nine-year-old daughter, Jasmine, from a life-threatening eating disorder. Jasmine, who is autistic and non-verbal, suffers from ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), a condition that severely limits her food intake.

Leanne recently shared her family’s struggles on the Greater Truth of a Woman” podcast, available on here. In the poignant interview, Leanne detailed the devastating impact of Jasmine’s condition and the family’s tireless efforts to secure the necessary medical care.

A Mother’s Intuition

Leanne’s journey began with a mother’s intuition. “From the moment Jasmine was born, I knew something wasn’t right,” she recalls. “She struggled to meet developmental milestones, and her eating habits were always a concern.”

Jasmine’s condition has progressively worsened, leading to significant weight loss and a multitude of health complications. “She’s losing precious weight every week,” Lean explains, her voice filled with anguish. “Her hair is falling out, she bruises easily, and her bones are becoming increasingly fragile.”

The Fight for Treatment

Desperate for answers, Leanne sought medical help, but the journey has been fraught with challenges. “The waiting lists for specialized care in Northern Ireland are simply unacceptable,” she says. “Jasmine’s condition is critical, and every day of delay puts her life at risk.”

To secure the necessary treatment, Leanne and her husband have turned to private healthcare in London. However, the costs are astronomical, and the family has launched a fundraising campaign to cover the expenses.

A Community Rallies

Despite the overwhelming odds, the Carrickfergus community has rallied around the Hathorne family. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals have generously donated to the fundraising campaign, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak situation.

“The support we’ve received has been truly overwhelming,” Leanne says, her voice filled with gratitude. “Every donation, every kind word, gives us the strength to keep fighting for Jasmine.”

Leanne ‘s story is a poignant reminder of the urgent need for improved healthcare services for children with complex needs in Northern Ireland. It also serves as a testament to the power of community compassion in times of crisis.

Northern Ireland Online encourages readers to learn more about Jasmine’s story by listening to her interview on the “Greater Truth of a Woman” podcast and contributing to her fundraising campaign. Together, we can help Lean and her family give Jasmine the fighting chance she deserves.
