Amsterdam, Netherlands: A tragic incident occurred at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on Wednesday when a person was pulled into the spinning turbine blades of a departing aircraft, resulting in their death. The incident took place on the apron near the terminal as a KLM flight was preparing to depart for Billund, Denmark.
In a statement, Dutch flagship carrier KLM confirmed the incident: “An incident took place at Schiphol today during which a person ended up in a running aircraft engine. Sadly, the person has died,” the airline said, without disclosing the victim’s identity.
Dutch border police, responsible for security at the Netherlands’ largest airport, have initiated an investigation into the incident. Passengers who were on board the aircraft were safely removed as emergency services responded to the scene.
The aircraft involved is reported to be a short-haul Embraer jet, part of KLM’s Cityhopper service, which operates flights to nearby destinations such as London. Dutch news reports indicated the plane was surrounded by fire trucks and ambulances near the departure terminals, with images shared by the NOS public broadcaster.
Schiphol Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe, has strict safety and security measures, and such accidents are rare. The airport handled approximately 5.5 million passengers in the last month alone, highlighting its significant traffic volume.
This incident has shocked the aviation community and prompted a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to this fatal accident.
