Belfast, Northern Ireland – 15/12/2023

In a disheartening turn of events, the Belfast offices of PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity fell victim to an act of vandalism on Antrim Road. The incident has left the organization grappling with damages to its sanctuary area, a space that has been pivotal in providing solace and support to those in need.

The sanctuary area, cherished by many as a refuge from the demands of everyday life, bore the brunt of the senseless act. Vandals destroyed the water fountain, planters, and window boxes, elements that contributed to creating a tranquil space for individuals to take a moment to de-escalate, especially during times of crisis.

As a local charity committed to preventing loss of life and fostering hope within the community, PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity has been a beacon of support for those facing mental health challenges. The charity operates with the vision of establishing a compassionate society, free from the scourge of suicide.

Reverend Bill Shaw, Chair of PIPS, expressed deep disappointment in the wake of the vandalism. “We are saddened by the recent act of vandalism that has affected our sanctuary area. This space has been invaluable for people seeking solace and support, especially during challenging times. It is disheartening to see our efforts to create a compassionate society undermined by such destructive actions.”

Notably, PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity relies entirely on public donations, receiving no government funding. The financial burden of repairing the damages caused by vandalism diverts resources that could be better spent advancing the charity’s vision and supporting those in need.

Rev. Bill Shaw acknowledged the dedication of PIPS counselors, working tirelessly despite the challenges posed by the recent incident. “Our counselors are committed to their life-saving work, undeterred by the actions of a select minority. We extend our sincere apologies to our clients for any inconvenience caused during this period of repair.”

In response to this unfortunate incident, PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity is issuing an urgent appeal for support from the community. Donations can be made online at https://pipscharity.enthuse.com/cp/52c41/fundraiser#!/.

The charity remains steadfast in its mission to prevent suicide, support families, and build hope within the community. The resilience shown in the face of adversity exemplifies the strength of PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity and its commitment to creating a compassionate and supportive environment for all.
