Renowned actor Steve Halliwell, famed for portraying Zak Dingle in the long-standing Emmerdale series, passed away at the age of 77.
Making his debut on the ITV soap in October 1994, Halliwell concluded his remarkable 27-year tenure in 2021, leaving an indelible mark on the show.
In a heartfelt statement, his family revealed that he peacefully departed, surrounded by loved ones, emphasizing his role as an incredible father and grandfather who continued to bring joy until the very end.
Described as the “father of the show” by ITV drama executive John Whiston, Halliwell was praised for being just as wonderful off-screen as he was on-screen, earning the endearing moniker of the show’s “fun mischievous uncle.”
Born in Lancashire, Halliwell initially worked in cotton and paper mills before undergoing a career shift to become an actor. His television career spanned the 1970s to the 90s, featuring roles in series such as Here I Stand, Heartbeat, and Coronation Street, before solidifying his legacy in Emmerdale as the head of the Dingle household, becoming the soap’s second longest-serving cast member based in Yorkshire.
In 2018, he temporarily departed Emmerdale for five months to address a serious heart condition, during which he had a pacemaker fitted. The family expressed gratitude to the staff at St James’s Hospital in Leeds and Wheatfield Hospice for their love and kindness during Halliwell’s final days.
