Police are appealing for information after three masked males threw petrol bombs at a police patrol vehicle in Strabane on Saturday evening. The attack happened in the Ballycolman Estate shortly after 5pm. Police said the vehicle suffered minor damage and warned the incident could have caused serious injuries.


Police have launched an investigation after three masked males threw petrol bombs at a police vehicle in Strabane on Saturday, 10 October.

Officers were carrying out patrols in the Ballycolman Estate shortly after 5pm when the vehicle came under attack.

Police said three males, who were masked and dressed in black, each threw a petrol bomb towards the passenger side of the passing police car.

The vehicle sustained minor damage.

The incident has prompted an appeal for anyone with information to contact police.

Police condemn Strabane petrol bomb attack

Chief Inspector Cherith Craig described the incident as a “totally reckless attack”, particularly because it happened in a built-up residential area.

She warned that although only minor damage was caused to the police vehicle, the attack had the potential to result in serious injuries to officers or members of the public.

Police said officers were in the area carrying out their normal duties and responding to calls from people who may need assistance.

Chief Inspector Craig added that attacks on police are unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
