Leading Queen’s cancer experts to front free public event focusing on breast cancer and other cancers related to women. The aim of the event is to improve awareness, encourage earlier action and it is hoped to also save lives.

More than 5,000 women across Ireland are diagnosed with breast cancer alone every year, as the Freemasons of Ireland launch a major new health initiative aimed at getting potentially life-saving information directly into local communities.

The initiative will see the organisation host a series of events, all open to the wider public, all free and focused on health and wellbeing. This informative event is the first to focus solely on breast and ovarian cancer and will be held at La Mon Hotel on Tuesday 22 September 2026 at 7.30pm.

The completely free September event will bring two leading Queen’s University Belfast cancer specialists, Professor Kienan Savage and Professor Stuart McIntosh, directly into the community to discuss cancer research, symptoms and warning signs, early detection and treatment.

According to figures from the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry and Irish Cancer Society, more than 1,500 women in Northern Ireland and around 3,600 women in the Republic of Ireland are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

Former GP and active Freemason Dr Harry Wray, who has helped develop the initiative, said: “If one woman leaves one of these events, recognises something isn't right and makes an appointment she might otherwise have put off, this initiative will have been worthwhile.

“As a doctor, I spent my working life seeing the difference that early diagnosis can make. Fear can sometimes stop people seeking advice, but knowledge can give people the confidence to act.

Organisers are stressing that women do not need to have any connection with Freemasonry to attend. The event is part of a wider programme of health awareness events planned for communities throughout Ireland with the sole aim of saving lives.
Jayne Selby, wife of the Provincial Grand Master of Down, said she hopes women of all ages will take advantage of the opportunity.

“Women are often very good at looking after everyone else, but sometimes not quite so good at prioritising their own health. This is an evening where women can comealong, listen, learn and leave feeling better informed and more confident about looking after themselves and encouraging the women around them to do the same.
“You don't have to know anything about Freemasonry, and you certainly don't need to have any connection with it. This event is for the wider community, and we would love to see women from right across Ireland come along.”
The Women’s Health Event takes place at La Mon Hotel on Tuesday 22 September 2026 at 7.30pm. Admission is completely free and open to all women.
