Groomsport Heritage Walking Tour
Explore the fascinating history of Groomsport, County Down, on a guided heritage walking tour through the village.
The tour brings centuries of local history to life, covering everything from Viking raiders and Irish chieftains to Scottish settlers and Duke Schomberg’s landing on his way to the Battle of the Boyne.
You’ll also hear about the voyage of the Eagle Wing, regarded as the first attempt by Ulster-Scots people to emigrate to America, along with stories of local landlords and families whose names changed over the generations.
Historic Sites on the Tour
The route includes a number of important buildings and landmarks around Groomsport, including:
The Coast Guard Watch House
The first lifeboat house in Belfast Lough
The fishermen’s cottages at Cockle Row
Groomsport House
The village’s two churches, both dating from the 1840s
Tour Information
Duration: Approximately 90 minutes
Cost: Free, although donations are welcome
Meeting point: Cockle Row Cottages
Start time: 2:00pm
Tour Dates
6th and 20th June, 4th and 16th July, 1st and 16th August and 5th and 12th September.
Visitors should meet at Cockle Row Cottages in Groomsport before the 2:00pm start.
