Visit the Sir Samuel Kelly Lifeboat in Donaghadee
Discover the remarkable story of the Sir Samuel Kelly Lifeboat and the courageous crew who helped rescue survivors from one of the worst maritime disasters in the Irish Sea.

Based in Donaghadee, County Down, the Donaghadee Heritage Preservation Company preserves the historic lifeboat and shares the maritime heritage of Donaghadee and the surrounding Ards Peninsula.

The Story of the Sir Samuel Kelly
On 31 January 1953, the MV Princess Victoria car ferry foundered near the Copeland Islands during severe weather.

The crew of the Sir Samuel Kelly lifeboat played a vital role in the rescue operation, saving 33 people. Despite the efforts of several rescue vessels, 136 people lost their lives in the disaster.

Visitors can see the preserved Sir Samuel Kelly and learn more about the lifeboat, its crew and the events surrounding the loss of the MV Princess Victoria.

Volunteer tour guides are available to share the stories behind the lifeboat and the area's rich maritime history.

There is also a small shop selling Sir Samuel Kelly merchandise, helping to support the ongoing preservation of the lifeboat.

Admission
Admission is free, although donations towards the preservation project are very welcome.
