Lyra McKee Murder Investigation: Detectives Renew Appeal for Information

Detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee have renewed their appeal for information. Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Detectives investigating the murder of Lyra McKee have issued a renewed appeal for information more than seven years after the journalist was shot dead in Derry/Londonderry.

The 29-year-old journalist was killed while observing rioting in the city on 18 April 2019.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team continues to investigate the murder and is asking anyone with information to come forward.

£20,000 Crimestoppers Reward Offered

The renewed appeal is being supported by the independent charity Crimestoppers.

The charity is offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information provided directly to Crimestoppers that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Lyra’s murder.

Crimestoppers guarantees anonymity. Calls are not recorded, caller identification is not used and internet addresses cannot be traced.

Detectives Seek Information About the Gunman

Detective Chief Inspector Hazel Miller said officers are particularly seeking information about the gunman who carried out the fatal shooting.

She said detectives believe there are people who may have important information but feel frightened, reluctant or unable to speak to police.

Detective Chief Inspector Miller said:

“Your information, however small or unimportant it may seem, could be the missing piece that helps us deliver justice for Lyra and her family.”

She added that people’s circumstances and allegiances can change over time.

Detectives remain ready to listen to anyone who now feels able to provide information about the murder of Lyra McKee.

Investigation Remains a Priority

Detective Chief Inspector Miller said the commitment to identifying and prosecuting those responsible has not weakened.

She said detectives have worked continuously for more than seven years to bring those involved in the murder to justice.

Her thoughts remain with Lyra’s family, partner, friends and colleagues, who continue to live with the impact of her death.

She said:

“No family should have to endure this ongoing torment. They deserve answers. They deserve to see those responsible held accountable.”

Police said Lyra’s murder caused deep and lasting hurt across the wider community.

The killing was widely condemned, and detectives believe someone may still hold information that could help progress the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity, heard conversations or has information about the weapon or gunman is being encouraged to make contact.

Even information that appears minor could prove significant when combined with existing evidence.
