Fleadh Cheoil Belfast 2026 Set to Open With Free City Hall Celebration

Fleadh Cheoil Belfast 2026 officially begins at Belfast City Hall on Sunday 2 August.

The free opening event starts at 12 noon and will feature traditional music, dance, community performances and a major evening concert from Sharon Shannon and her Big Band.

The eight-day festival runs until Sunday 9 August, bringing concerts, competitions, street sessions, family entertainment and cultural events to venues across Belfast.

Belfast will strike the opening note of Fleadh Cheoil Belfast 2026 with a major free celebration outside City Hall on Sunday 2 August.

The opening programme begins at 12 noon on the festival’s main Gig Rig stage. It will launch eight days of music, dance, competition and cultural events across the city.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann will take place from Sunday 2 August until Sunday 9 August. Belfast is hosting the festival for the first time and is expected to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Free Opening Event at Belfast City Hall

Admission to the opening celebration is free, with no advance booking required.

The event will reflect the festival’s theme of Celebrating Together through a collaborative showcase involving musicians, dancers, bands and young performers.

Traditional musicians from Ards CCÉ will perform alongside members of the Belfast Bands Forum, Arts Ekta and the South Asian Dance Academy.

A large choir of school pupils from Belfast and North Down will also participate.

The performance will highlight the different communities and musical traditions contributing to Belfast’s first Fleadh.

Sharon Shannon to Headline Opening Night

The free opening programme will include performances from established traditional and folk musicians.

Those scheduled to appear include:

• Sharon Shannon and her Big Band

Sharon Shannon will headline the opening night from 8pm.

The acclaimed accordion player will close the first day of celebrations with a performance on the main stage outside Belfast City Hall.

Representatives from Belfast City Council, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and host branch Ards CCÉ will also welcome visitors.

Comhaltas is marking its 75th anniversary in 2026, while Ards CCÉ is celebrating 50 years.

Visitors will be able to attend lectures about the city’s harping tradition, learn how musical instruments are made and visit exhibitions celebrating traditional performers.

Fleadh Events Across Belfast

The Fleadh will extend beyond the city centre through a large community-led fringe programme.

East Belfast

East Belfast events will include a Joshua Burnside-curated showcase at Banana Block on Wednesday 5 August.

Members of the pioneering traditional group Hearth will perform at Bullhouse East on Thursday 6 August.

The area will also host dance heritage events and community storytelling sessions.

North Belfast

North Belfast’s programme will include heritage tours and the North Block Night Market at Crumlin Road Gaol on Friday 7 August.

The Duncairn and Áras Mhic Reachtain will host music and cultural events.

Musicians from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria will join the Beyond Skin showcase at the Duncairn on Thursday 6 August. The performance will explore links between Persian, Kurdish and Celtic music.

South Belfast

The Commons will host a programme of live events, while additional activities will take place in local alleyways and libraries.

Ormeau Park will also serve as one of the official Fleadh campsites.

West Belfast

West Belfast will welcome the festival with family fun days, community celebrations and live music.

Closing Celebration at City Hall

Fleadh Cheoil Belfast 2026 will conclude on Sunday 9 August.

The Senior Céilí Band Competition will take place at the Waterfront Hall earlier that evening.

The newly crowned All-Ireland champions will then perform on the Gig Rig outside Belfast City Hall, bringing the festival to an energetic close.

Large crowds and significant travel disruption are expected during the Fleadh.
