Fleadh Belfast Travel Advice: Visitors Urged to Use Public Transport

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann begins in Belfast on Sunday 2 August 2026, with more than 800,000 visitors expected during the eight-day festival.

Visitors, residents and commuters are being urged to:

• Use public transport wherever possible
• Avoid driving into Belfast city centre
• Allow extra time for every journey
• Use one of the three official Park and Ride sites
• Check road closures and temporary bus-stop changes before travelling

Road closures, diversions and parking restrictions will operate across Belfast city centre from 5am on Sunday 2 August until 7am on Monday 10 August.

With only four days remaining until Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann begins, visitors, residents and commuters are being encouraged to plan their journeys and switch to public transport.

Belfast will host the major celebration of Irish music, song, dance and culture from Sunday 2 August until Sunday 9 August 2026.

More than 800,000 people are expected to visit the city during the festival. A large part of Belfast city centre will become a pedestrianised event zone to provide a safer and more welcoming environment.

Although the main routes around the wider city will remain open, road closures and diversions are expected to make driving through the city centre difficult. Belfast City Council and Translink are therefore advising motorists to leave additional travel time and check their route before setting off.

Fleadh Belfast road closures and travel restrictions

Road closures, diversions and no-parking restrictions will come into effect at 5am on Sunday 2 August.

The main restrictions will remain in place until 7am on Monday 10 August.

There may also be limited closures while festival infrastructure is installed and removed between Thursday 30 July and Wednesday 12 August.

Driving through Belfast city centre will be difficult during the Fleadh. This includes motorists attempting to drop off or collect passengers.

Residents, commuters and visitors are advised not to drive into the city centre unless necessary.

People already living in Belfast are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport whenever possible.

Public transport during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

Metro, Glider, Ulsterbus and Northern Ireland Railways services will continue operating throughout the festival.

Translink plans to provide additional capacity and more frequent services to meet the expected demand.

Temporary changes will apply to some bus stops, departure points and pick-up locations around Belfast City Hall. These changes will be signposted in the city and published through Translink’s website and Journey Planner app.

Passengers should expect public transport to be significantly busier than usual. They should plan ahead and leave additional time for their journeys.

Additional late-night bus and rail services are planned for:

• Sunday 2 August
• Thursday 6 August
• Friday 7 August
• Saturday 8 August
• Sunday 9 August

Special day-return bus services will also travel to Belfast from towns and cities across Northern Ireland, subject to demand. These services can be booked online in advance.

Three official Fleadh Park and Ride sites

Three Park and Ride sites will operate near the main routes into Belfast:

Eikon Exhibition Centre, Sprucefield

This site is conveniently located for motorists travelling towards Belfast from the M1.

Giant’s Park

Giant’s Park is located near the M2 and will provide day parking only.

Belfast Harbour Estate

This site is located near the M3 and provides another alternative for visitors approaching Belfast from the east.

Frequent shuttle buses will connect all three locations with Belfast city centre on every day of the festival. Services are expected to operate every 10 minutes during peak periods.

Parking costs £10 per vehicle per day. Visitors can book spaces in advance through RingGo or pay on arrival using contactless payment machines. Spaces remain subject to availability.

Walking and cycling around Belfast

Belfast city centre is compact, and most Fleadh venues are within walking distance of each other.

Visitors arriving at Belfast Grand Central Station can walk to Belfast City Hall in less than 10 minutes.

Belfast Bikes will continue operating throughout the Fleadh. However, a small number of city centre docking stations will be temporarily unavailable.

Frank and Honest Belfast Bikes by Beryl is also offering 20% off 100-minute bundles during the week before and throughout the festival.

Secure bicycle parking is available inside the ground-floor car park at CastleCourt. Additional cycle docks are located throughout the city centre.

Accessible parking and transport

All three Fleadh Park and Ride locations will have dedicated disabled parking spaces close to the shuttle bus pick-up points.

Low-floor shuttle buses will operate between the Park and Ride sites and Belfast city centre.

Dedicated Blue Badge parking will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis at:

• Dunbar Street, outside Common Market
• Winetavern Street and Smithfield Market

A free city centre loop service will operate throughout the event. It will support people with mobility needs, families with young children and musicians carrying instruments.

Fleadh taxi pick-up and drop-off points

Taxi services will continue operating during the festival.

Dedicated taxi collection and drop-off points will be positioned around the edge of the pedestrianised event zone at:

• Corporation Street
• Little Donegall Street
• The junction of North Street and Royal Avenue
• King Street
• Adelaide Street
• Chichester Street

Taxi operators have been informed of the temporary arrangements. Passengers booking by telephone or through an app should be told which collection point to use.

Public hire taxis will continue operating where possible, although some ranks may be temporarily relocated during busy periods.

Coach and tour bus arrangements

Coach and tour bus services will operate from Linenhall Street and three dedicated coach-parking locations.

Tour operators can reserve access to the free coach terminal or parking sites. Facilities will also be available for coach drivers.

Anyone attending Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann should plan their journey before leaving home.

Visitors should consider using public transport for their full journey. Motorists can also leave their vehicles at one of the official Park and Ride sites and complete the journey by shuttle bus.
