Two Men Released on Bail as Carrickfergus Marina Death Investigation Continues

Two men arrested on suspicion of maritime offences following the sudden death of a woman in Belfast Lough have been released on police bail. Detectives are continuing their investigation and have appealed for information from anyone who was near Carrickfergus or on the water on Saturday, 11 July.

Police Continue Investigation Into Carrickfergus Marina Death

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a woman in the Carrickfergus Marina area.

The woman, who was aged in her 30s, had been travelling aboard a sailing boat from Groomsport towards Carrickfergus on Saturday, 11 July 2026.

Two men, also aged in their 30s, were arrested on suspicion of maritime offences in connection with the incident.

Police have confirmed that both men were subsequently released on bail while further enquiries are carried out.

Sailing Boat Travelled Across Belfast Lough

Detectives understand that the sailing boat departed Groomsport at approximately midday.

Police received a report shortly before 4pm concerning the sudden death of the woman in the Carrickfergus Marina area.

The vessel was later located around 2.5 miles from Kilroot Power Station, between buoys one and two in the Victoria Channel.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Investigators believe many people were visiting Carrickfergus and the surrounding coastline because of the good weather on Saturday, 11 July. A considerable number of boats and other vessels were also using Belfast Lough.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area between midday and 4pm to contact them.

They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who:

• Was sailing or boating on Belfast Lough
• Was near Carrickfergus Marina
• Saw the sailing boat travelling from Groomsport
• Has photographs, video recordings or other relevant information
• Witnessed anything unusual between 12pm and 4pm

Police have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
