Local sports clubs urged to apply for Mid and East Antrim funding boost

Local sports clubs across Mid and East Antrim are being encouraged to step forward and apply for funding through the new 2026/27 Amateur and Grassroots Sporting Organisations Improvement Fund.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is inviting eligible organisations to submit an expression of interest as part of the first stage of the funding process.

The scheme is open to amateur and grassroots sporting organisations that own or lease their facilities, with a focus on improving infrastructure, increasing participation, and enhancing the overall user experience within local communities.

What the funding can be used for

The fund is designed to help extend the lifespan and value of sporting facilities across the borough.

Projects supported under the scheme include:

  • Building work such as new builds, phased developments, extensions, and reconfigured layouts
  • Groundworks including paths, seating, and fencing
  • Capital equipment that can be recorded on a financial balance sheet
  • Administration costs such as architectural fees and tender advertising (up to 10% of the grant)

The funding can also support upgrades that improve accessibility, sustainability, and the overall usability of sports facilities.

How much funding is available?

Projects must be located within Mid and East Antrim and have a minimum value of £10,000.

The council will provide up to 50% of the total project cost, with a maximum grant of £50,000 available.

There is no upper limit on the overall project value, provided the organisation can secure the remaining funding required.

Mayor highlights success of previous funding rounds

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said the fund reflects the council’s commitment to improving physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing across the borough.

He highlighted that:

  • 13 clubs have benefited from the fund over the past three years
  • More than £290,000 has been distributed to improve local sporting facilities

He added that the initiative has helped strengthen local infrastructure while creating more inclusive opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

Who can apply?

To be eligible, organisations must:

  • Be formally constituted sporting organisations
  • Be based within Mid and East Antrim
  • Own or lease the facility linked to the proposed project

The funding process is competitive and delivered in two stages. Organisations that successfully pass the expression of interest stage will be invited to submit a full application.
