Ten-year-old Reid Stranaghan completed an inspirational 23-length sponsored swim, raising £250 to support local man Dougie’s fight against Stage 4 oesophageal cancer. His determination has sparked further community support for the family’s GoFundMe campaign.
A Community Rallies Behind a Brave Young Fundraiser
Ten-year-old Reid Stranaghan, a close friend of Caleb, has completed a remarkable sponsored swim, taking on 23 full lengths of the pool to help support Dougie, a much-loved family man battling Stage 4 oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
Reid’s incredible effort raised £250, which will go directly towards Dougie’s privately funded treatment.
His determination and kindness have touched many across the local community, with messages of support continuing to pour in. The sponsored swim has also brought renewed attention to the family’s fundraising campaign.
Why Reid Swam: Dougie’s Story
Dougie’s world changed in June 2025, when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer, Adenocarcinoma.
His wife, Julie, set up the GoFundMe page to help secure life-extending immunotherapy treatment that the NHS cannot provide for his condition.
Dougie is known locally as:
- A devoted husband
- A caring father to their 10-year-old son
- A hardworking man
- A long-serving member of the Fire Service
- A passionate motorbike enthusiast
Although Dougie is currently receiving NHS chemotherapy and trastuzumab, he could also benefit from Pembrolizumab, a promising immunotherapy drug for HER2-positive and PD-L1-positive patients. Sadly, this treatment is not funded on the NHS, and the only way to access it is through private care — costing around £100,000 over two years.
