The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed that a man has tragically died following a single-vehicle road traffic collision in Newry on Wednesday, 8th October.

According to Inspector Cherith Adair from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit, the incident occurred shortly after 3.30pm when officers received a report that a male pedestrian had been struck by a lorry in the Albert Basin area of the city.

Emergency services attended the scene, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The area was closed for a period of time to allow for a forensic examination, but has since reopened.

Inspector Adair said:

“Our enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 901 08/10/25.”

Police have also issued a statement regarding a graphic image that is being circulated online, believed to have been taken at the scene of the fatality.

Officers are urging the public to stop sharing the image immediately, describing it as “distressing” and deeply disrespectful to the victim’s family.

They also warned that anyone found sharing the image could be committing an offence under the Communications Act for improper use of a public electronic communications network.

The PSNI has asked anyone with information about the origin or sharing of this image to contact them on 101.
