Throughout May 2025, Mid and East Antrim will commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a series of events across Ballymena, Carrickfergus, and Larne. Expect music, storytelling, parades, history talks and family fun, all designed to honour the past and inspire future generations. The flagship ‘Beacons of Freedom’ celebration will take place on 8 May at three key locations, marking a heartfelt tribute to the heroes of World War II.
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has announced an exciting and meaningful programme of events to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, inviting residents and visitors to join in a series of commemorative celebrations throughout May 2025.
The schedule aims to honour the sacrifices and triumphs of World War II while educating and entertaining people of all ages across the Borough, from Ballymena to Carrickfergus and Larne.
The commemorations kick off on 1 May at Larne Museum and Arts Centre from 2pm to 4pm. ‘Wartime Reflections’ will feature:
Historical footage from Northern Ireland Screen.
A short story presentation, The Day the Yanks Dropped In, based on real events.
A fascinating insight into the role of Animals at War.
On 3 May, the spotlight turns to Boneybefore as the Andrew Jackson Centre and US Rangers Museum host a full day of VE80 commemorations from 11am to 4pm. Highlights include:
Talks and music celebrating wartime history.
Performances from the Larne School of Highland Dance.
Stories of local heroes, including nurse Martye Adair who served in Burma.
Wartime history talks on the US troops in Northern Ireland, the Belgian army’s local connection, and Poland’s link to the conflict.
Wartime tunes performed by Geoff Hatt.
The centrepiece of the celebrations falls on 8 May with the lighting of ‘Beacons of Freedom’ at three key locations across Mid and East Antrim:
Swing-era music from the Swing Gals.
Performances by the Antrim and Derry Fiddlers, Magheramorne Silver Band, Geraldine Donnelly Dancers.
Children’s entertainment.
Live music from Third Carrickfergus Band, Zolene and the ALS Band, and Campbell College Pipe Band.
A parade from Carrickfergus Town Hall to the War Memorial Gardens.
Beacon lighting at 9.30pm.
Family-friendly entertainment including magic shows and storytelling.
A parade from Larne Harbour Front to Curran Park.
Performances by Kellswater Flute Band, Larne Harbour Accordion Band, and Easy Jazz.
Children’s magic show, face painting and community stalls.
On 10 May, younger visitors can enjoy an enchanting storytelling event at the Andrew Jackson Centre featuring Ellan Rankin, author of The Secret Elephant — the true story of a Belfast zookeeper who took an elephant home for safety during bombing raids.
An accompanying arts workshop will allow children to create their own bookmarks. Booking is essential via Ticketsource.
Also on 10 May, Carrickfergus Museum and Carrickfergus Historical Society are teaming up for a day of wartime-themed activities at Carrickfergus Town Hall. Expect:
Demonstrations, workshops and games.
Live music and dancing.
Displays and talks on local and international wartime history.
Adding an artistic touch to the commemorations, the Council has commissioned a special VE80-themed colouring book illustrated by local artist Louis Humphrey. Featuring wartime landmarks such as Dunaird Camp in Broughshane, Sunnylands Camp in Carrickfergus and Larne Naval Base, the colouring book will be available at all VE80 events.
Alderman William McCaughey, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, urged the public to join the commemorations:
“As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, it is important that we come together to honour those who served and sacrificed for our freedom. These events allow us to reflect on our shared history and ensure that future generations appreciate the lessons and legacy of World War II.”
