Three young girls from Carrickfergus are being hailed as heroes after their quick thinking helped save a man’s life during a fire. On Friday, August 30, 10-year-old Georgia Anderson was walking through Sunnylands with her friends Mia and Kayley when they noticed smoke billowing from the window of a nearby flat.

Without hesitation, Georgia immediately called the emergency services, alerting them to the fire. Fire crews from Carrickfergus arrived promptly, rescuing the man inside and quickly extinguishing the flames.

Watch Commander Brian Smyth praised the girls for their life-saving actions. “We wanted to recognise the quick thinking response of the P7 pupil and offer our personal thanks for her actions,” he said. Smyth also gave special thanks to firefighter Jeanna Robb for tracking down the three girls and organising a special visit to honour them.

Commander Smyth also used the opportunity to send an important reminder to the public: “If you hear a smoke alarm, please ring 999 like Georgia did. Don’t assume that someone else has already made the call. Every second counts, and we would rather come out and not be required than arrive when it’s too late.”

Thanks to the bravery and swift action of Georgia, Mia, and Kayley, a potential tragedy was averted that day, proving that even the youngest members of the community can make a big difference.
