A 32-year-old woman, Kirsty Leigh McMaster, has pleaded guilty to outraging public decency after admitting to engaging in sexual activity inside St Mary’s Chapel on Chapel Lane in Belfast city centre.
McMaster, who has no fixed address and is currently in custody, appeared before Belfast Crown Court today, where she confirmed her guilty plea. Her solicitor told the court that she was homeless at the time and struggling with addiction issues.
Judge Philip Gilpin has ordered a pre-sentence report, with sentencing scheduled for March 27.
Meanwhile, her co-accused, Sean Paul Russell (37), from Market Street, Downpatrick, did not attend today’s hearing. His arraignment is set for March 3.
The incident, which occurred on May 18 last year, was reported to police by witnesses who were disturbed by what they saw inside the church. When officers arrived at the scene, both individuals allegedly responded with verbal abuse before being arrested.
Following her arrest, McMaster told police she had been heavily intoxicated and believed any sexual activity had occurred outside the church.
She has been remanded in custody until her sentencing next month.
