Arrests Linked to 2023 Omagh Attack

Detectives investigating the attempted murder of former Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh in February 2023 have made two arrests.

The arrests took place earlier today, Monday, 11 August 2025.


Details of the Arrests

A 45-year-old man was arrested in the Stewartstown area, while a 25-year-old man was detained in west Belfast.

Both were arrested under the Terrorism Act and taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning.

Police also confirmed that a property in west Belfast was searched and a vehicle was seized as part of the ongoing investigation.


Background to the Case

The incident in 2023 saw DCI John Caldwell seriously injured in a gun attack outside a sports complex in Omagh. He was targeted in front of his young son, sparking widespread condemnation and a major counter-terrorism investigation.
