Two men are in police custody following the discovery of weapons and suspected drugs during a stop and search operation in south Belfast.

The incident occurred on Friday night, 16 January, in the Agincourt Avenue area of the city, after officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland stopped a vehicle during routine patrols.

Vehicle Stop Leads to Weapons Seizure

Police carried out checks on the vehicle, which revealed it was uninsured. When officers spoke to the driver, a 27-year-old man, he informed them that an air rifle was stored in the boot.

A subsequent search of the car uncovered further items, including a machete. The driver was arrested on suspicion of several offences, including possession of an offensive weapon.

Residential Search Uncovers Suspected Drugs and Cash

Following the arrest, officers from the Tactical Support Group carried out a search of a nearby residential address. During the operation, police seized:

  • A quantity of suspected Class A drugs
  • A quantity of suspected Class B drugs
  • A sum of cash

A second man, aged 21, was arrested on suspicion of a number of drug-related offences, including possession of a Class A controlled drug with intent to supply.

Police Statement on Community Impact

A PSNI spokesperson praised the actions of officers involved, stating that the operation prevented suspected drugs from entering local communities.

Police reiterated their commitment to tackling drug supply and organised criminal activity, noting the harm drugs cause to individuals, families, and neighbourhoods across Northern Ireland.
