TL;DR:
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has approved repair work at The Gobbins following rockfall damage. Environmental assessments and statutory planning are underway. Phase II development plans are also progressing as the Council commits to long-term conservation and tourism enhancement.

Essential Repairs Approved for The Gobbins Coastal Path

Repair work at The Gobbins, one of Northern Ireland’s most spectacular coastal attractions, has been officially approved by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council after a rockfall earlier this year caused significant damage to the popular cliff path.

The Council has appointed engineering and environmental specialists to carry out detailed surveys and develop a safe, environmentally compliant plan to reopen the site.

Prioritising Safety and Environmental Protection

A spokesperson for the Council confirmed that public safety remains the top priority:

“The Gobbins is one of our Borough’s most treasured attractions. We are working tirelessly to ensure it can be safely reopened for visitors.”

Due to its location in an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), which hosts Northern Ireland’s only mainland colony of puffins and various seabird species, repairs cannot begin during the nesting season (April–September).

The Council is currently navigating the statutory planning and environmental approval processes to ensure that works begin as soon as it’s legally and ecologically safe to do so.

Long-Term Vision Through the Belfast Region City Deal

In addition to addressing the rockfall damage, the Council reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the site through Phase II of The Gobbins development, funded by the Belfast Region City Deal.

The next phase will focus on:

  • Sustainable site improvements
  • Enhancing visitor experiences
  • Promoting conservation and educational tourism

“We see The Gobbins not only as a tourism asset but as a vital part of our natural heritage,” said the Council.

Visitor Centre Remains Open This Summer

While The Gobbins cliff path remains temporarily closed, the Visitor Centre is still welcoming guests with a full programme of summer activities, exhibitions, and educational events.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the surrounding Islandmagee region, offering:

  • Stunning coastal walks
  • Family-friendly summer events
  • Cultural programming and local experiences

Community Engagement and Next Steps

The Council thanked the public for their ongoing patience and support. They reiterated their commitment to keeping residents and tourists informed as progress continues.

“We are fully committed to preserving The Gobbins for future generations.”
